Scholiere schrijft opstel in sms-taal

LONDEN - Een dertienjarige scholiere uit Schotland heeft voor een relletje gezorgd door een opstel te schrijven in zogeheten sms-taal. Ze verdedigde haar aanpak door te beweren dat ze vloeiender is in de stenostijl van sms'jes dan in gewoon Engels, aldus The Daily Telegraph maandag.

De Schotse onderwijsautoriteiten en de Schotse ouderraad waarschuwen nu voor 'taalarmoede' bij de scholieren. Ze wijzen erop dat kinderen steeds vaker fonetisch schrijven. Ze schrijven het woord zoals het klinkt, waardoor ze bijvoorbeeld het verschil tussen 'there' (daar/er) en 'their' (hun) niet meer weten.

Het omstreden opstel begon met de zin: "My smmr hols wr CWOT. B4, we usd 2go2 NY 2C my bro, his GF & thr 3 :- kds." In het Engels staat hier: "My summer holidays were a complete waste of time. Before, we used to go to New York to see my brother, his girlfriend en their three screaming kids." (Mijn zomervakantie was zonde van de tijd. Eerder gingen we altijd naar New York om mijn broer, zijn vriendin en hun drie schreeuwende kinderen te zien.)

but my Parents were so miserable because of eleven september that they decided to stay in scotland and spend two weeks up north.
